Interview w/Vannette AKA the Black Barbie

Vannette has a nickname of the Black Barbie and with good reason. Vannette is a mesmerizing model. Her parents hailing from Liberia and currently residing in the DC Metro area, Vannette has been modeling for a few years now. I first found Vanette on the site Women to Desire and on her Yahoo Group. Having emailed her a few times and participated in her group, I found that Vanette is always very warm and welcoming to everybody who just says hello and gives her feedback. She's the epitome of sexiness, and excudes sensuality and feminity that is as irresistable as it is spellbinding. Say hello to Vannette!

What got you into modeling? I dated a male model during my freshman year of college. I would go to all of his fashion shows and one day I was watching some of the female models walk the runway and I was like "I can do that!" So I contacted some photographers, got a portfolio together, and the rest is history.

What do you bring to the modeling field or game? Dark-skinned females are under-represented in the industry today. Because I am a dark-skinned female and I am not the stereotypical, thin, tall light skinned model; I bring a completely different look to the market.

What is your most defining feature? Do I have to say just one? I would say my eyes. Most guys would say my breasts.

In taking photos, what are you most comfortable in? I am very confident, versatile, and I love trying new things, so I am comfortable in almost anything I wear, as long as I feel comfortable and sexy in it.

What is your favorite part about being a model? I love the fact that I can play a role in capturing a moment in time and telling a story through an image. It gives me the opportunity to be creative and get into characters that I never thought were in me.

Which magazine would you appear on the cover of if you had a choice? W Magazine! I have been a fan of W for the longest time. Although my look isn't the typical haute couture look, I would jump at the opportunity to grace the cover of such a prestigious fashion publication.

For the fellas reading this blog, I got a question. R u single or taken? Do I have to answer that? lol. I'm somewhere in the middle right now.

Another question Im sure the fellas will want to know, what are you most likely to wear to the beach? To bed? At the beach, you will probably see me in a bikini with a pair of shorts, flip flops, and some hot sunglasses. I wear whatever I'm comfortable in to bed. My favorite thing to sleep in is a giant XXL T-shirt.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love to work out, cook, read fashion magazines, design clothes (lok out for my line... Summer 2006), go to lounges, make/spend money, and spend time with the people with whom I am closest.

Do you have any career-goals in the future in modeling? I plan to take modeling as far as I can. I want to be seen on magazine covers, videos, and international runways. I would also love to use my modeling career as a stepping stool to the industry. I'll be graduating from college in December '06 with a major in mass communication and a minor in PR/Advertising, so my career goal is to host an entertainment TV show and move on to start my own PR/Advertising firm and a modeling agency which will represent models of various ethnicities, shapes, and sizes. After that I plan to go back to my home country, Liberia, and help rebuild.

Do you have any plans on making a website? I will be launching a wesbite late this summer. Look out for

What’s the best advice ever given to you? One of my best friends from high school died of cancer in 2004. Before she passed away she wrote an article for a local newspaper in which she said, "Life may not be about living until you are 90. Maybe life is just about coming to understand it and being at peace with what you have been given."

Sum up yourself or your style with one word, any word...... Sexy

Why did you want to become a model?

I actually never aspired to be a model. I started out as a vocalist, then through meeting new contacts, I got involved in acting. Eventually, I got involved in modeling because so many agents told me I was photogenic. I never aimed to model because I always thought a model had to be a certain height, and I'm pretty short. But I realized that there are more than one type of model and I CAN be a print model. Pretty much, I am getting in wherever I can fit in. I am using ALL my talents to be recognized!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I am a NERD! I LOVE computers, reading everything from books to magazines, and spending quality time with the ones I love. I am really a homebody. I love going out and partying on occasion, but nothing is better to me than popping some kettle corn and making it a block buster night!

Where is your favorite vacation spot?

As of right now, I have two favorite vation spots. One being New York City, and the other being Orlando, Florida. I love New York because of the hustle and bustle, the GREAT shopping, and the diversity of people there. But I also fell in love with Orlando, Florida because that is the city where the national Miss American Teen pageant took place this year (if you didn't know, I am Miss Indiana American Teen) and some of my fondest memories lie in that city!

What is your favorite movie of all-time? Any favorite television show?

My favorite movie of all time is Grease. It's a classic movie and I absolutely adore musicals! It always puts me in a great mood! My favorite television show as of right now HAS to be America's Next Top Model. I'm ADDICTED!!!

Do you have any career-goals in the future?

I currently attend Indiana State University where I major in Tv-Radio-Film with a minor in Journalism. It is my goal to one day become a national on air personality. I want to be the next Oprah! What are your goals in the modeling world? My goals in the modeling world are to become nationally recognized so that I can cross over into other aspects of entertainment.

What is your most defining feature?

My most defining feature is my tenacity. I am a fighter and will not give up no matter what the situation. No matter how I look physically, I recognize that inner beauty and strength are everything and without them, I cannot succeed! I strive to be tenacious because I am a proud black woman who is proud of her heritage and wants to create a legacy that makes my family proud!

What’s the best advice ever given to you?

Never compromise yourself for anyone or anything.

What is your favorite part about being a model?

My favorite part of being a model is having access to the best hair and makeup people around! Without them, I would look, well, like my regular old self!

Do you plan on putting together a pay site?

No. I really see no point in doing that. Why make someone pay to see my portfolio?
Her group is

"Models are everywhere....but never at your music video shoots".

"Models are everywhere....but never at your music video shoots". It seems like all the hot ones never come out. Are they just too busy with photo shoots, calendars, fighting off stalkers, etc? Are you having a problem with getting models to support your projects? There are some things that you can do to increase your chances of having a successful video shoot, commercial or whatever it is you require beauties to attend. Let us give you some insight as to how you might be able to pull this off and get that girl who looks like "Melissa Ford, Tyra Banks, or Eva Pigford" on your next project.

First, proper planning is the key for any successful event turnout. The same way you take the time to promote your event, you might want to put the same effort into scouting for models. This is especially so if you have a project which depends on the look of models to be a hit.

You don't want to start making phone calls and sending out emails two days before your project is to kick off. People have lives and are very busy these days. At least try to make contact with the models you are interested in having two weeks or so in advance. You want to provide them with as many details as possible. First and foremost, who you are and what you represent. Give them exact times, accurate phone numbers and addresses. You might include a schedule of what will happen at your event so that they have an idea of how things will run. Make sure you come correct on this one. If you don't have a manager or publicist to make these calls for you, maybe you should seek out the help of a model agency or management company. Many times they will forward your request to models that are in your area and interested in your type of event.

Second, you really don't want to waste anyone's time. It's the one thing you can't really compensate for or gain back once it's gone. Do you really want to insure that the hot model you contacted will participate in your project. You probably need to make allowances in your budget to compensate models for their time. At the very least give them gas money. But if you put aside $150.00 - $300.00, maybe that will allow you to have at least 2 - 5 of your top choice models available. Even if you are on a limited budget, you might want to ask them what their rates are per hour or day. This gives you points in their book, because now they see you are serious not just about your project but about the people you have involved.

You'll have to think about this one. Quality or quantity. One or two hot models might be more effective than a crowd of women in your video. Determine what your focus will be and make adjustments accordingly. Personally, I would rather have the one hot model on the close up scenes than shooting into a crowd. Take some notes from the mainstream guys but don't try to over do it folks. Their budgets are more accommodating than yours. Don't think for a second that models are just poppin' up on videos sets for free.

Hopefully all this helps you to get your game on track with the models and your music videos looking like you got the "Hype" treatment. The bottom line is that proper planning and budgeting will get you almost everything you need for a successful project. And even though Tyra Banks may not show up at your video .... you'll get some models that look just as hot.

Keep grindin'

Interview w/Aura Harewood

Aura Harewood is a beautiful young lady from Georgia who like myself went to the Mecca of African American education, Howard University! On HU’s campus, she was part of activities, ranging from the HU Showtime Marching Band Ooh La La! Dancers to the Golden Key International Honor Society.
She is a stunning and classy looking woman who has much wide variety of experiences, from including appearing in music videos such as Dave Banner’s "Crank it Up" and 50 Cent’s "Piggy Bank" (she was the motion captured for the animated dancer) to being on the cover of the book "Someone Else’s Puddin". When she isnt modeling she works as a TV show Production Assistant, working on such shows as Elimidate and American Idol. She’s headed to New York and I know she will take the big apple by storm. I’ve been admiring Aura’s work on the net for a while now so I am so glad that I finally got an interview with her. Check it out!

Why did you want to become a model?

To be honest, I actually always wanted to be a model when I was younger because I felt it was a glamour career that would allow me to make money playing dress up. LoL. Of course, I now realize there is a lot more to modeling and it is not as easy or glamourous as it seems.

What do you bring to modeling?

I feel that I bring personality, class, and enthusiasm to modeling. I am also a hard working, dedicated individual, and when I am in front of a camera I try to give it all that I have, regardless of how long I have been shooting.

What is your favorite part about being a model?

The two types of modeling that I do are print and promotional, because I am somewhat vertically challenged. LoL. I love doing promotional modeling, because it allows me to network, meet all different types of people, and sometimes even brighten someone's day.
I love doing print as well, because it allows me to transform in front of the camera. I love looking at my pictures and being able to say "Wow! That's me?"

Do you have any career-goals in the future?

As far as modeling goes, I would love to get to the point where I am a household name, but at the same time I know modeling is a short-term career. I obtained my BA degree with a TV Production major with hopes of becoming a producer and a casting director. This is an obtainable goal that I am currently pursuing as well.

What is your most defining feature?

My lips and eyes are what most people notice first and compliment me on the most.

What’s the best advice ever given to you?

I have been given a lot of good advice, but as far as modeling goes, the best advice that has been given to me has been: "Don't let people box you in, or tell you what type of model you are. You have to act like you're better than that and stay true to yourself. You can't be Tyra Banks, you can only be you, and that is special enough." My roommate told me that a couple of days ago, and it is definitely something that is going to stick with me.

What do you hope to do in the modeling in the future? Any pay sites? Or are you taking it all the way to America's Top Model?

I do have a Yahoo! group for those that would like to learn more about me and are interested in following my career. Please check it out and feel free to join. Here's the link:
