Covergirl: Tyra Banks

Tyra banks gets another cover and interview! Here are excerpts from Pop Culture Junkie:

Tyra on Oprah:

”Oprah Winfrey is a mogul. Martha Stewart is a mogul. I’m probably a mogul in the making. I’m almost there.”

Tyra on her childhood in Inglewood:

”I used to want to write commercials as a kid,” ”I used to tell my mom, ‘Mom, they didn’t end the commercial right. They should have ended it on the burger, ’cause they’re trying to sell the burger, and they ended on the lady’s face and I don’t even remember if it’s McDonald’s or Wendy’s anymore.”’

Tyra on her mother’s words of wisdoms:

”Even as a model I used to think ‘brand,””’My mom always told me, ‘Plan for the end at the beginning. You’re gonna have to retire really early like an athlete, and then what are you gonna do after?”’ ”So I always looked at it knowing that there was something after.”

HARLEM 2020: Sean John Fall 2008

By Sonya Magett, BlackVoices.com

It's been almost ten years since the Man Formerly Known As Diddy launched the Sean John clothing line, and five since his last runway show, so the anticipation for his Fall 2008 show presented last Friday was quite befitting.

Combs stands to again even more recognition after delivering a collection that paid homage to those designers who paved the way for him: Icons Willi Smith, Patrick Kelly, Byron Lars, Stephen Burrows, Karl Kani, Patrick Robinson and Tracy Reese were all acknowledged. "I celebate the path they carved or me, this couldn't have happened without them" said Combs. Nice.

Fashion Week Hits Diversity Problem

NEW YORK (AP) — "What happened to all the black people on the runway?" asked model Tyson Beckford, who attended several shows at New York Fashion Week. "There are no blacks on the cats."

Naomi Campbell put it another way: "Women of color are not a trend. That's the bottom line."

And while Campbell wasn't invited to the shows this week and didn't attend, the supermodel may have been on to something. It seems that while the fashion industry was worrying about how skinny models were, it was neglecting another problem: how white they were. There were drops of color here and there, but with the exception of a couple of shows, the runways were lined with pallid, bony bodies.

"There used to be myself, Naomi Campbell, Veronica Webb, Tyra Banks," Beckford said. "There used to be a lot of us out there, but today a lot of the designers just aren't catering to black people."

In truth, this Fashion Week looked like about as diverse — or homogenous — as many before it. But if ever there should have been more people of color on the runway, the time was now.

The issue has been the topic of three panel discussions since September held by former model and agent Bethann Hardison. Diane von Furstenberg, president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, sent a memo to its members encouraging them to create fashion shows "that are truly multicultural." The media has focused on the issue.

Meet Dria!

If you ever wanted to see what Marilyn Monroe would look like if she was Latina, look no further! Dria is a beautiful, ambitious model from straight out of NYC. What I like about her is her energy and enthusiasm. She’s plans to go all the way to the top in this game, and she has the look, confidence, and ambition to do it. Check out this lovely Latina and holler at her on Myspace! Say hello to Dria.

Where are you from? What city, town, state are you representing? I was originally born in Miami, FL however I represent the South Bronx, NY. Either way, from FL to NY, its all luv!!

Why did you want to become a model? I never really wanted to become a model. I never thought it was reality for me. An agent/casting director approached me one night as I was walking in downtown Manhattan. He enlightened me about the urban modeling movement with dollar signs in his eyes! LoL. I was VERY reluctant at first, because I envisioned that it was some kind of porno scam! LMAO! But I gave him my phone number just to see and once we spoke, it was straight business. He then convinced me to get in front of camera for a test shoot. Needless to say, I feel in love w/ the camera and I think it's safe to say that the feeling was mutual.

What do you bring to the modeling field or game? I feel like I bring sensuality to the game. I bring more than just the physical adding my own twist to things. I also bring that Latin flavor, which is definitely nothing new.. but it's always good to add the extra flavor seeing as men like different types of looks. Also, I will be putting the Grand Cayman Islands on the map!! Seeing as I am Puerto Rican & French Cayman.

What makes you stand out from all the other models out there? Well first off, I'd say that I know that I have branded my image and I am always looking at this industry like a business. By branding my image, I've turned it into a viable name to soon be in high demand. Also, I would say that I pride myself on being very well spoken & articulate, and not just an attractive female. I don't just put on a thong and stick my butt out. I like the fact that I embody sensuality and I feel that it shows in my photos. I am the whole package business wise, and I know where I want to be when I see the bigger picture. I try to stay away from music videos now-a-days, unlike alot of models trying to break through these days. And I am very aware of my money at all times. I make my own invoices, control my business accounts, demand per diem, and all the misc things when it comes to MY MONEY!! This sets me apart from many models because to many of them, it is about self satisfaction via compliments from the peanut gallery.

What was an experience when you had the most fun which was tied to something you were doing as a model? I would have to say my 1st Vegas experience!!! OMG! LoLz.. it was so crazy and fun! I was 20 yrs old, but I got booked for my 1st Magic show {fashion convention} the same weekend of the NBA All-Star game. Needless to say, it was oozing wild & craziness!! Everyone and their mother in the industry was there, so along with having one of the most fun & memorable experiences, I also got to network and mingle with top industry personalities while working ::ahem! aka getting PAID LoLz:: at the same time. Because of this, I've made great connections for future bookings, and I'm now in demand for the Magic Show twice year from now on! LoLz..

What do you like to do for fun? I love to travel, see new things, I love to shop, writing {on any given topic}, eating, eating & eating!! LoLz.. ummm listening to music & most of all.. just being spontaneous in life!!

Where is your favorite vacation spot? I would have to say Hawaii.. I love places like Vegas or Miami, but I don't consider them vacation getaways, more like business trips.

I’m sure the fellas will want to know-are you single or taken? I definitely have a special someone ;p

Another question Im sure the fellas will want to know, what are you most likely to wear to the beach? To bed? To the club, if you go to the clubs? Hmmmm.. lets see. To the beach I would definitely wear a bikini or a cut out one piece. I am infamous for those ;p To bed, I usually wear pajama pants with a wife beater [tank top] and to the club I lalalove wearing tight fitting cocktail dresses with stilettos of course!! hehehehe

What is your most defining feature? Well I'm sure the fellaz would say my bunz, LoLz! but I would have to say my lips!! Juicy 4sure!! ::wink wink:: BUT.. I can't rule legs out!! I don't work out hardly ever, but I can say that they are very thick but defined.

When you model, what settings do you like to do the most? I would have to say-- I love being inside using certain props with Beyonce playing in the background ::she gets me into DiVa mode:: LoLz. However, in doors or out doors, I just love to interact with the camera.

In taking photos, what are you most comfortable in? I am really comfortable in my skin, hahaha.. wait a minute.. don't take that out of context!! I do NOT pose NUDE!! LoLz.. I am very comfortable in my skin, but that doesn't mean I want to be in an itty bitty thong ever time. I love glamourous dresses .. I am more into beauty than sex appeal. But because I possess sex appeal naturally, I never try to hold it back, I let my personality shine thru :)

If you had a choice, what magazine would you be on the cover of? Hmmm, If I had a choice.. I would say 'W' or Vogue. But that is ALMOST impossible! LMAO! Curvacious women are not appreciated these magazines. But a more realistic choice would be Maxim or FHM. I definitely want to break through into the commercial industry rather than just settling for strictly urban printwork.

What is your favorite part about being a model? I am sooo into glamour modeling and I look to Ms. Monroe for ideas, seeing as she was an icon. I have to admit.. growing up, I wasn't glamorous at all!! I was a tomboy, and stayed in trouble. LoLz.. so I would have to say that my favorite part about modeling is the fact the camera lets me transform into whomever I chose to portray. Through my creativity behind the lense, I began to embrace my 'sexiness' and embody sensuality. Along with the creativity modeling has allowed me to express, another one of my favorite aspects of modeling is the fact that there are endless opportunities to excel in different directions of show business.

What’s the best advice ever given to you? Keep your eyes on the prize and nothing else. Success is a journey, and not a destination. And this is a man's world, so just learn how to be a woman in it ;p

What are your goals in terms of being a model? I definitely aim to become a household name through printwork and film roles. The next step would be exceling as an actress. Being a Bond girl is definitely a dream role. However, along with the title of model & actress, I aiming for mogul status!! I one day would love to publish a fictional novel that is capable of best sellers status. I would also love to create my own clothing line considering I am very into fashion trends. And I also definitely want to dip and dabble into the broadcasting field-- Possibly sports broadcasting, radio DJ, as well as hosting [t.v personality]

You have your Myspace. Are you thinking of putting together your own site, or maybe even a pay site? Yes, Yes.. the Myspace is ALWAYS crackin!! {myspace.com/dria_emanuel_nxtbrkthrucg} and I actually do have my own pay site that is in the works {MissDria.com} being sponsored by Global Sports & Entertainment Agency.. and it will be up and running in Jan. 2008. So stay tuned.

I’m glad that I got a chance to catch up with you, so for my last question, I want you to sum up your style and yourself with one word..... genuine ;)
