I always like to see intelligent discussion on the modeling game and Black Jack Skanz informs us of a discussion on "touching up" of photos on The Candy Shop blogtalk radio show:

The key is if it’s done with an eye for balance between fantasy and reality. I think the SHOWCase issues are best example of retouching done right. Photoshop works best like any other digital effect, when it’s used to augment what is already there. Anytime you try to create what ain’t there, it just ends up looking fake.

What does being a model mean to you?

I believe that a true model has an intimate connection with her kinesthetic sense and has the ability to make herself shine like no other. I believe that a true model is dedicated to her work no matter what the cost and one who is not afraid to say no to a major opportunity if she doesn't feel that she meets the qualifications in her own eyes because part of modeling is feeling happy and irresistible. Your true light can only shine if your mind, body, and spirit at at one with one another and you feel the rush that you're loved by everyone. You need that rush to be your best and to look and act your best. If you know you can't fail, you won't. If there is even a glint of feeling that you'll fail, you will. You'll only be the best when you say and feel that you are the best.. To me, that is what modeling is all about.

The first thing photographers notice about me is that I have an interesting look. Not many people have it and it catches their eye. My nationality is German, Scottish, and Cherokee, so it gives me a look that can fit difficult types of scenarios. Interview w/ The Italian Firecracker of the Firehouse Girls!

A.J. (otherwise known as the Italian Firecracker) is a hot model from Massachusetts! She is part of the group known as The Firehouse Girls. What I like about A.J. is that as her name implies, she is full of energy and has a spark to her that translates to the pics that she takes. When did you start modeling? I was in a few newspaper 'print ads' when I was a child. The first one was when I was about 9 months old and the other was when I was
7. Of course being that young, I didn't really understand what was going on. I was just a kid! When I reached college, I started modeling again and liked the feeling of being in front of the camera. I view modeling as a hobby, because it is something that I enjoy, but at the same time I wont let it get to my head. I'm an outgoing person and while it is fun to get recognition, I strive to pursue modeling projects that have value. Especially if it involves giving back to the community!

What would you say is your best feature? I receive many compliments on my eyes, they're naturally green. I have also been told that I have a nice "butt". The funny thing is, I don't work out. In fact I hate going to the gym! I guess I'm one of those lucky girls with good genes.

Tell me about the Firehouse Girls? I learned about this organization by visiting their website and they chose me to be one of their Official models. I was the first girl to be photographed from the state of Massachusetts. The Firehouse Girls is a group of models and photographers from all over the United States who come together to support Firefighters. My uncle works for the fire department in my town, so this group has a special meaning to me. The images from my photoshoot will be used in the Firehouse Girls 2010 calendar that will be sold throughout the Country. All proceeds will go to Fire Departments so that they can buy newer and safer equipment for their men. I am honored to be a part of this organization because everything we do is for a Good Cause!

What would you say is the best way to describe you? I love this question! I'm extremely outgoing and can carry on a conversation with just about anyone. I live for humor and I make people laugh everyday. If other people are laughing and smiling, chances are I will be too. I strive to be around those who are genuine and loyal, because I grew tired of relationships and friendships that weren't "True". I dont like people who lie, cheat, or take pleasure in hurting others. I keep my distance from people who fit that description. People often describe me as a "little ball of energy". I'm always moving around and chatting with people. I really cant sit still. However, I also have the desire to be alone from time to time. Some people take this personally, as if I'm trying to avoid them. This is simply not the case! I enjoy quiet moments by myself where I can relax and watch a movie. I balance my time being with others and enjoying their company, but I know when to take some time for myself.

What would you say is your specialty in the modeling field? I'm comfortable being in front of the camera. I have experience modeling Casual Wear, Glamour, Swimsuit and some Lingerie. I think it's important for a model to be versatile and experience different styles. I would say that I'm better at doing print related work, because I am too short to do runway modeling. I'm only 5'3.

I found out about Jessenia Vice from one of my readers, and when I checked her out I'd have to say I was amazed! What I liked about Jessenia was her distinct look and exotic flavor that sets her apart and makes her stand out. She's also very nice and down to earth! Not only does Jessenia model, but she also works as a nurse in an emergency room. A few years ago she never really saw herself as a model, and never intended on doing it. Now, she's a rising star, having been on various websites, in magazines, and tv shows like the Tyra Banks show. Thanks to my reader for the tip, and thanks to Jessenia for taking time out of her busy schedule to do this interview with me.

Where are you from, and what is your ethnic background? I'm from the Garden State: New Jersey. I am Latina of Ecuadorian decent

When did you start modeling? I started modeling last summer, but it's not the only thing I do, I also work at the ER.

What would you say is your best feature? Promise not to laugh? I love my eyebrows! Find it hard to believe? Ask my mother! LOL

Tell me about your most interesting experience modeling? My most interesting experience as a model would have to be while I was on set for the Tyra Show and they gave us lines to say a few minutes before we filmed. All i kept thinking was, "Wait, how do i do this!??! I’m not an actress!!!"

Do you get a lot of people saying “Kim Kardashian looks just like you?” Yes, I get told that I look like Kim Kardashian everywhere, at work in the ER, in line at the grocery store and while I'm out in a club.

As far as modeling, what would you say is your specialty? I specialize in glamour. I spend most of my days wearing srub uniforms because of work so when I put on lingerie I immediately feel sexy and my comfort ability with it shows in my photos.

When Crystal Renn was anorexic, her career as a model flourished. She had had heart palpitations. She was so weak that she fainted if she walked too far, and her bones had poked out sharply from under her paper-thin, taut, grey skin. But she was a US size zero – a UK size two – and the work rolled in.

But it was when Renn started eating and expanded to a UK size 16 that her career really took off. In Hungry, her autobiography, described by Nigella Lawson as "a riveting read" and launched on Tuesday at a glittering Manhattan party, the highest-paid plus-size model in America talks of the delicate new dawning of a vogue for women who are "lush and sparkly, with nary a jutting collarbone in sight".

Renn says that while "crazy town still loves to gawp at the ultra-slim" there is a growing appetite in the fashion world for "the natural shapes a woman's body takes when it's not being deprived of food".

Naomi Goes Ballistic for Black Models

Naomi Campbell has continued to work as a supermodel despite being 39, but even though she's been able to defy fashion industry norms, she says black and other models of color are having a tough time in the recession.

"This year, we have gone back all the way that we had advanced," she told The Telegraph last week. "I don't see any black woman, or of any other race, in big advertising campaigns."

Naomi said Italian Vogue's Black Issue last summer "made some noise," but didn't actually cause any changes in how often minority models are booked. "People, in the panic of the recession, don't dare to put a girl of colour in their campaign, full stop," she added. "Nor of any other race. It's a shame. It's very sad."

Ebony Fashion Fair victim of economy

The annual Ebony Fashion Fair's fall season -- which some call a rite of passage for black women -- has been canceled for budget reasons.

It's runway interruptus.

The Ebony Fashion Fair -- a catwalk show that traveled across the country, Canada and the Bahamas bringing designer fashion from around the world to predominantly black audiences -- has put its fall 2009 schedule on hiatus.

The reason? The economy.

Just a year after celebrating its 50th anniversary, the annual show featuring black models has been canceled by its producer, Johnson Publishing Company, which also publishes Ebony and Jet magazines. The fund-raising show made stops in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The controversy over representation of black models on catwalks all over the world continues, this time in Brazil!

SAO PAULO: Supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Madonna's "toyboy" Jesus Luz have opened Latin America's top fashion show, but the focus is more on race than the racy summerwear and celebrities.

The Sao Paulo Fashion Week has imposed quotas requiring at least 10 per cent of the models be black or indigenous. The measure was brought in after intense pressure from anti-racism groups and Brazilian prosecutors who blasted the SPFW's bias to white models.

Previously, only a handful of black models were among the 350 on the catwalk - usually less than 3 per cent in a country where nearly 50 per cent of the population is of African descent.

Researchers found that men preferred the shape of ordinary women, equivalent to dress size 14, than so-called super-attractive models, according to a study that compared the body shapes of ordinary women, Playboy centrefolds, models from the 1920s and 1990s and glamour girls.

Professor Rob Brooks at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and colleagues, asked 100 male students to judge the attractiveness of 201 line drawings of female torsos with different hip, waist and shoulder measurements.

These great ladies also served as the inspiration for a new (albeit smaller class) of black models in the 90’s such as Naomi Campbell, Chrystele,Waris Dirie, Tyra, Lana Ogilvie, Gail O’neil, Anna Getaneh, Claudia Mason, Alek and others waiting in the wings.

So what happened?? Why are the runways and cover pages today void of beautiful women of color? We were accepted in the 70’s, 80’s and early nineties. Were we a trend? Black shoppers spend $20 billion on apparel each year- despite not seeing ourselves represented on runways and print ads. The urban purchasing power isn’t a trend or insignificant.

Why did you want to become a model? One of my neighbors in Ohio was a model. When I was 14, she was featured in Ebony Magazine and it inspired me.

Who is your greatest influence and what help you to decide that you would love to be a model? This is also answered in the previous question. Strong confident women influence me the most. My neigbor, the model, definitely played a huge part in my life.

What do you bring to the modeling field or game? A midwestern attitude - a fresh approach without all of the drama.

What do you like to do in your free time? I'm pretty laid back. I like to hang out with friends. I'm also in Law School so that takes a lot of my time.

Where is your favorite vacation spot? Las Vegas...oh, and cruises. Especially Caribbean cruises.

If you were a piece of candy, what would it be and why? Anything sweet sour. I'm a good girl with Mid-western values. But, I've got a little kick to me too!

How would you define your style? Simple and laid back. I'm a jeans and t-shirt girl. I love flip flops and fabulous boots. That's me...easy.

What are you most likely to wear to the beach? I will wear a 2 piece. If I had a one piece that was like totally awesome, I woud wear it, but I like throwing on a 2 piece bikini. To bed? NOTHING. What is your most memorable experience as a model? It was total fun shooting a Harley Davidsion shoot in Las Vegas!! It was 4 of us very different girls and 4 very different guys and a huge production crew and it was fun for about 5 days! Cant wait to see those images next month!!

What is your favorite part about being a model? Being made beautiful! I cant do make up, hair or style myself. I feel very pretty when I model and like a little doll.

Which do you prefer, runway modeling or just photoshoots? I would love to have more opportunities to work the runway. But, I'm not 5'9. Print is more marketable for me and I rock it!

What are your goals in terms of being a model? I want to do major campaigns and book more national print jobs and commercials. Harley Davidson was just the start. I'd also like to break into film and television in the near future.

There is a very interesting article about an exhibition at the New York’s Metropolitan Museum which is starting tonight (5/4)The exhibit displays the history of modeling and how it started and how it has progressed. Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Kate Moss and others are slated to appear at the event tonight at the New York Metropolitan Musuem of Art.

An excerpt:

The first fashion model is believed to have been Parisian shopgirl Maria Vernet Worth in 1852, who became a 'mannequin' to help her husband, the couturier Charles Frederick Worth. Customers became used to viewing clothes in the hushed salons of the couture houses, where they were modelled by salesgirls who did their own hair and make-up, and were normally of a similar age to the clients, most of whom were in their late twenties and thirties.

For more information about the exhibit (called The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion), check out the Metropolitan Museum website. The exhibit runs from May 6-August 9.

When I saw a model on a party flyer in Philly, I wondered who this sexy and shapely model was. Later, this model, Mz Spadez, emailed me to be interviewed and featured on this site. What I like about this model Mz Spadez is what caught my eye the first time; the lovely chocolate brown skin tone and her amazingly shaped body with those juicy curves. However, there's more to her than just her pretty face and her hot body; she's not only a model, but a beautiful woman inside and out and a mother as well. Well, I hope you all are ready, cuz Mz. First of all, where are you originally from and what city, state or town are you representing? I am orginally from the Bronx. Born n raised in NY all my life..

What are your measurements and your height? 36-27-41..all natural baby! =D

Why did you want to become a model? I actually decided to take professional pictures one day and see how far I could take myself. I have always wanted to model, loved the thought of being recognized anywhere!

What do you bring to the modeling field or game? I think im bringing the chocolate sisters back..Brown skin girls are beautiful too..I Just wish people would give us more opportunities and credit.

What has been your most significant accomplishment in modeling? My most
significant accomplishment honestly has to be all the websites that have featured me including this one!

What is your favorite part about being a model? My favorite part about being a model is the dressing up and of course when people recognize me as Mz.Spadez..makes me feel like Im doing my job.

What do you do to keep up your body? Ummm..good question..i just started exercising..so right now ima say the grace of God..cuz i sure do eat!! =D

What’s the best advice ever given to you and what are your goals? No matter if the world stops believing in you, you continue to believe in yourself. My goals for the future are to be a successful entrepreneur in my own business. Hopefully to have been in many magazines and videos, interviews, hosting a few shows and parties..but who knows what the future can bring and of course to be the greatest mother to my daughter.

Tax Time! Advice for Models.....

In the world of modeling, one thing that can’t be avoided is taxes. For any model in their career its all about the deductions. The reason for this is that most work, whether it is having a spot in a video or doing a photo shoot, most people in the industry are freelancers. With all that income, chances are you will be doing a Schedule C.

Schedule C is a form in which you record your income and expenses. The income minus the expenses is your income, which is to be transferred to the form 1040. Below I will summarize some of the most common deductions for models and all entertainers for that matter.

Continuing Education-This includes coaching expenses and acting lessons. Not only that, it can also include dance training and voice training as well. For models, it might include any type of education which will further you career as a model.

Promotional Expenses-Audition tapes and videos, business cards, film, mailing supplies, photos, portfolio expenses and filling out your resume.

Supplies and Expenses-This can include accounting fees, cleaning and repairs of clothes in your wardrobe, dues to any professional groups, membership to sites used to promote you, hair care, insurance on equipment, legal fees, makeup and cosmetics (for business use only!) and manicures (again, for business use!)

Other supplies and expenses can include business meals, office supplies, photocopies, postage, and commissions paid to an agent or manager.

Travel-Write off your auto expenses but only for business related travel, as well as taxis, limos, parking fees, subways and buses (only for business use, again!) Expenses for travel out of town can include such items as airfare, car rental, lodging and meals.

Equipment-As long as it is related to modeling, you can write off audio equipment, cell phone, computer equipment and a fax machine.

It is best to be as conservative as possible because it will take more than good looks and a hot body to win over an IRS agent, you know! Be sure that you have receipts and maybe even a log of all the expenses you incur in your day to day venture as a model. The beautiful and shapely Tana Brown is a model coming from Dallas, Texas! I first found out about Tana when she was the beauty of the week in Jet one week last year. What I like about her is her curves and her lovely smile! Modeling is one of Tana's talents, and she is looking to do some major things in the modeling world. Why did you want to become a model? Modeling is just another one of my many hobbies; you have to use the talents that are given to you. I believe I have a unique look and I have always been into fashion.

Are you single or taken? I’m taken by myself at the moment lol

Who is your greatest influence and what help you to decide that you would love to be a model, and what do you bring to the modeling field or game? I don’t really have one person in particular that I look up to in the modeling business, but there are models that keep it classy and you would definitely not confuse them with a stripper. I want to be a model that is damn sexy but is still classy at the same time. It is to show others that are aspiring to be a model that you don’t have to lose yourself to make it in this industry.

What do you like to do in your free time? Work out, play with my dog lol or be with friends or family

Where is your favorite vacation spot? I had the best time in Spain two summers ago, it is an exotic place.

If you were a piece of candy, what would it be and why? Well to describe myself, probably Sweet Tarts, because they are sweet and sour. I can be a very sweet girl, but you definitely don’t want to be a person to rub me the wrong way and end up on my bad side… OH NO !!! LOL

What was your first kiss like? Well if you want to call this a first kiss, it was in kindergarten. I had a little boyfriend and I went to kiss him but he cried and told the teacher and I got time-out, not what I had planned at all lol !

What are you most likely to wear to the beach? To bed? To the club, if you go to clubs? The beach, I have a nice stomach so you will always catch me in a two piece bikini. I try to wear as little as possible to bed, clothes just make sleeping more complicated they get tangled up and I get hot really easily. When I go out I like to pull out my freakum dress and a hot pair of heels, you know have to keep it sexy!!

What is your most defining feature? I would have to say my eyes. I speak with them a lot. People say to me all the time “If looks could kill …” But I have a hot pair of legs too!

Yes I do get a lot of attention and although it is flattering sometimes it can be annoying when I am trying to get things done and men sometimes don’t get the hint that they are bothering you. But I always try to be as nice as possible.

What is your favorite part about being a model? I love the glamorous side of modeling, and it also gives you the opportunity to play different characters for a photo shoot.

Which do you prefer, runway modeling or just photo shoots? I would love to do high fashion runway modeling but I am aware of how tall I am, so I will just have to take over print/commercial modeling and maybe move on to acting in the future.

What’s the best advice ever given to you and what are your goals in terms of being a model? The best modeling advice someone gave me was to just be myself and have fun. When you do that it just flows naturally. I’m interested in doing glamour and things that are more artistic. I don’t know where modeling will take me in the future I just know it will be somewhere fabulous, and I’m having fun all the way there.

When I see you, I think of Eve, the rapper. Do you hear that alot? Yes, from time to time I get that. lol...

Why did you want to become a model? I first started modeling as a passion. I love it and you have to stay passionate. I am looking to start making a name for myself in the modeling world & let everybody see what it is that I have to offer ...my look, my style, my personality, and my unique-ness just to name a few. Most importantly I want to put more models from the Texas on the map. Everythang is bigger and better in Texas.

Who is your greatest influence and what help you to decide that you would love to be a model, and what do you bring to the modeling field or game? My late grandmother is my biggest influence becuase her loss serves as a memory to stay hungry. I decided to be a model to show the indusrtry that curves are beautiful and to become a personality . Someone that people can't stop talking about because I have so much positive things going my way. I want to have success because the sky's the limit.

What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy relaxing in the house since that rarely happens. I love a glass of red wine and to paint while relaxing to some sounds of Sade.

If you were a piece of candy, what would it be and why? I'd be a starburt, lol so I can share something juicy... no really plus starburst have a way of making the mouth water.

What was your first kiss like? It was crazy, I was about 12 or 13, and it was really embarrassing because every one of my friends had kissed boys two years before. I was scared to admit I hadn't kissed anyone yet because I didn't want to seem like a prude... lol... I was nervous and I didn't want to open my mouth, so I just gave him these awful tight lips.

What is your style, and what are you most likely to wear to the beach? To bed? To the club, if you go to clubs? I'm a lot more conservative in my personal life. But even when I'm dressed down, I wear a nice shirt, nice jeans and stillettos. I'm the kind of girl that will come to bed with my man's button down and boy shorts. Now as far as the club, I have to pull out the freakum dress.

What is your most defining feature? My hips , I must say I love them next to my lips. They're just so petite in comparison to the rest of my body that it gives me an hourglass shape!

Being as beautiful as you are, you must get alot of attention day to day. How do you deal with all that attention? Why thanks, I love that people gravitate to me. I live by the motto live, love and be loved. So I just remain humble at all times and share my southern hospitality.

If you had a choice, what magazine would you be on the cover of? I would have to say King just becuase it's a dream. However I love Bonsu, he's the best, so I'd do the cover of XXL's Eye Candy Special Edition if he asked, lol.

Which do you prefer, runway modeling or just photoshoots? I love the hype of runway shows however I love the experience of photoshoots. It allows more leg space for my personality.

“NOTORIOUS DMV” – Model Actress Talent from the DMV makes her big screen debut in the highly anticipated movie “NOTORIOUS” which starts showing in theaters on January 16th 2009.

“Dymond” is model/actress talent that has been setting her goals and accomplishing them. She was casted for the role of a “Hot-Girl” in the movie NOTORIOUS and appears on screen during the recording session in which Biggie (Played by Jamal Woolard) lays down the breakout track “Juicy”.

Landing this role was quite an accomplishment for the 22 year old. She has been pursuing her dream of modeling and acting for about two years.

If you are involved in the DMV modeling scene you’ve most likely seen her in fashions shows, music videos and some magazines including the JET June16 2008.

To land the role in the Notorious movie, she actually sent in pictures and got picked to come up for the casting.

For me, the model that made the biggest splash was Ms Dynasty. I thought her SHOW Magzine cover was the magazine cover of the year. She made such an impression that she was on tons of hip hop blogs, including Kanye West's who posted some of her juicy pics a couple of days ago. The best advice I have got in terms to modeling is to always be your self and never to sell your self to get what you want. My goal as a model is to grace the pages of many magazines, host as many events as I can, and appear in a few more fashion shows.

How long have you been modeling? Only about 7 months

Why did you want to become a model? I enjoy fashion, and in my everyday life I am always trying new looks and styles. Modeling allows me to experiment with different sides of myself.

What do you like about modeling? I love transforming. Hair, makeup and wardrobe brings out my alter ego lol.

What do you bring to the modeling field? Personality, which I try to express in every picture.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like spending time with my son and close friends, shopping, partying, and going out to eat.

Were is your favorite vacation spot? Unfortunately I haven’t done much traveling but I plan to visit Vegas in 09. I heard it was great!

If you were a piece of candy, what would it be and why? I would have to say a jawbreaker because you get a different sweet taste with each new layer and it’s long lasting.

What was your first kiss like? I don’t remember my 1st kiss so I’m guessing that means it wasn’t too good lol.

What are you most likely to wear to the beach? Ironically, I’m not a big fan of swimwear, so I would most likely wear a cute sundress. To bed?I love to sleep in oversized Tees. To the club, if you go to clubs? Anything that is trendy and eye catching.

What is your most defining feature? I would have to say my eyes. They are usually the first thing that demands attention!

Being as beautiful as you are, you must get a lot of attention day to day. How do you deal with all that attention? Not all attention is good attention. I don’t let anything go to my head and just take it for what it’s worth.
